February 21st, 2011 5 comments

I was doing my heat-training in the hills of McKinley yesterday when i witnessed one of the most grueling race in the country: a 7-hour non-stop running on a 2.4km loop.

Here are some photos I took during the event:

Triple A Cup: Lots of Fun and Lesson too!

September 13th, 2010 6 comments

Someday, I want to hear the words, “Congratulations! You’re an IronMan!” But that won’t happen if I just pound and pound the roads and be contented with running a marathon. I must take the second step to pursue that dream.

Ready, Legs Go!

The successfully concluded TRIPLE A Cup (Amphitrite Alabang Aquathlon) helped me in realizing this dream. Now I can proudly say that I’m an aquathlete. The event I joined was  Extra-Lite category. Wherein you have to run 2.5K then swim 200meters and finish strong with another 2.5K run. I was confident that I can finish the race, the only problem is that I was grasping for air after the 1st kilometer in the run leg because I foolishly paced with the fast runners. Anyway, just charge it to experience.

The Fast "Runner" (Abs kung Abs)

It was already engraved in my mind that I’m there to join the fun and a good time finish would just be an extra to my aquathlon debut.

Some Photos from the Event (Click the image to enlarge)

So, here are stuff that made the race FUN, FUN and FUNNY and some Lessons too:

  • Days before the event, I was broadcasting on my Facebook status that I will drown those who will overtake me in the swim leg. No one dared to come swim near me during the swim part. Lesson: Bullying works (not in school but in aquathlon). Good thing, no one get drown.
  • At the first plunge, I drank some Palms Country Club Pool water (sosyal)- seems like water from the hydration station in not enough for me. This slowed me down in the process. Lesson: relax on the swim leg, you don’t need extra hydration.
  • Funny to see fellow racers run even the swim leg. I don’t want to name names, but it was fun seeing them stride not glide in the pool. Lesson: I will practice striding in the water next time- its gets you faster and exert less energy.
  • I was running 4:15/Km during the first run leg because of the adrenalin rush. It was zoooooom!!! Later did I paid of the lost energy because I was already walking some parts of th 2nd run leg. That slowed me down and took most of my energy. Lesson: Don’t get overly excited. I need to distribute my energy and the burst of my adrenalin.

We are Aquathletes

Run - Swim - Run (Lite: 2.5K - 400m - 5K) (ExtraLite: 2.5K - 200m - 2.5K)

Thank you so much Ms.Tiff Batilo and Co. for organizing a “labor of love” event to people like me. Now I can proudly say, “I’m an AQUATHLETE!”

Lastly, this event would not be successful without the faithful support of our sponsors and partners: The Palms Country Club, Filinvest Corporate City, Vitamin World, Scorecard/Sports Media, Sunlife, Dole, Global Era Logistics Inc., 5 Aces Restaurant, Gourmet, Globe Telecoms, Gloprints, Powerade, Pharex BComplex, Men’s Health, Women’s Health & Runners World. We hope that this is just the beginning of our partnership in the multi-sports world. Thanks to all of you!

Biodiversity Run 2010: Runner turned Photographer

September 4th, 2010 14 comments

I am already registered to run the 10K but when I learned that there’s a lot to be done in e preparations, I volunteered myself to help the organizers and take some photos for the event (was a bit sad because battery ran out at the middle of the race). Well, we are co-organizer of this race spearheaded by Asean Centre for Biodiversity.

Sporty Karylle on "Oath of Sportsmanship"

Just last night, we did some stuffs and final preparations for the biggest running event (most attended) so far in the history of Los Banos, Laguna. More than 700 runners joined this maiden edition (does this mean there’s a Biodiversity Run 2011?).

Happy Birthday Run for Sir M!

Anyway, I’m sure everyone doesn’t want to read a long blog post and just see the photos and results. Sorry, its not yet available. Please visit back.

Biodiversity Run 2010 PHOTOS are now available (look for and tag yourself at Facebook, 3 albums in the FB Page). RESULTS are now available too. Sorry for the not-so-good photos, I’m not a pro. Special thanks to Alex for lendin me hi DSLR. Congrats again for the podium finish bro!

Some quick notes:

  • Allan Ballester got the 1st place; Coach Rio dela Cruz came in 2nd and Darry Bado took the 3rd position in the 21K Men’s Category.
  • Chang “Mamita” Hitalia (ANR Alabang/Takbo.ph member) finished 3rd for the Half-Marathon distance (2:14:30), women’s category. I had the opportunity to escort her while on bike.
  • Karylle Tatlonghari joined the 5K category. Fans and runners enjoyed her presence too! She led the athlete’s oath of sportsmanship. Trivia: She has a mag cover as Maria Makiling (see below), the same mountain she ran today.
  • Yael Yuzon, lead vocalist of Sponge Cola, also joined the 5K run, he is fast too!
  • ANR Alabang/Takbo.ph member’s were in the top 10 in their respective categories: Alexis (8th on the 21K male); Chit (8th on the 10K male); and Lens (8th on the 10K female). 888 pala kayo!
  • My friend, Alvin “MA” Mendoza finished 7th. I’m so happy because this is his first official 10K race. (Congrats bro, buti nagkita tayo kagabi, nabigyan kita ng race packet)

Me with Madz and Pedz

  • Was happy to see fellow takbo.ph forumers Cybermumu, Madz (http://myunrevealedthoughts.blogspot.com/) and Pedz (http://runningatom.blogspot.com/). I also saw a runner wearing six:30, I forgot to approach him.
  • I learned a lot on race organizing through the leadership of Coach Nick; Sunday and Toki Lawas (MACRunners Sports Inc.). Hats off to you guys! Glad to be a MACRunner too!
  • 21K route is technical, tough and tiring! TTT Yet satisfying when you crossed the finish line.
  • Sir Toel, a 21K finisher, just texted me saying, “thank you sir and congrats! what a nice race. we had fun. wishing a happy weekend. gud pm.” Text messages like that put smile on the faces of tired organizers. Thanks also for the participation Sir Toel.

With ANR Podium Finishers (Chit, Mamita, Lenz & Alex)

  • Some more comments on the turn out of the race: “ok lang for the late gun start. mag-reklamo ba ako ako eh nag podium nga ako. hehehe. yung coaching mo sa start. habang umaakyat ako ng Makiling paputang agila base lagi ko yung iniisip. ‘conserve energy, slow down a little’.” -Alex, 8th placer 21K; “James thanks so much for all the support you’ve given us. Didn’t expect na may medal for the top 10 kaya nung sinabi mo na meron sobrang natuwa nmn ako,it’s my 2nd Trail Run & my first to have a medal :) … UPHELL nmn! akala ko may pagka-Nuvali ang Trail..mountain trail run pala talaga..dead na ung isa kong nails :( ” -Lens, 8th placer 10K; “di ko inaasahan na ganun yung ruta. nagtaka nga ko sinabihan mo ko ‘save energy!’ buti nakinig ako. salamat!” -Chit, 8th placer, 10K

As part of the organizing Team (MACRunners Sports Inc.), I would like to thank God for a good weather and everyone’s safety; the sponsors; marshals; police dept; UPLB College of Foresty; staff of Asean Centre for Biodiversity and most especially all those who participated in this event. Your participation would help the ASEAN Biodiversity Fund. Apologies for the late gun start and other hitches along the way. Hope you don’t kill us. Again, thanks for joining the Biodiversity Run 2010.

Snapshots Thursday: TBR Dream Marathon

August 19th, 2010 8 comments
It’s has been a while since I last posted something about running. Its just that I’m finishing my backpacking stories. But because The Bull Runner Dream Marathon 2o11 has an official date already (March 20, 2011) let me remember my most unforgettable race.
At the finish line, TBR Dream Marathon (May 22, 2010)
The Bull Runner Dream Marathon 2010- my very first marathon (42.195K /26.2 miles). My face shows all the hard work and pain my body and mind have gone through. Those short 5-second moment at the finish line is still memorable up to this very day, when you raise your hand in celebration of victory, high-five those your fellow marathoners, be congratulated by your friends and thank God for the strength He gave.
Unexplainable and indescribable for marathon virgins.
Those are moments that fellow marathoners would forever cherish.

To those who are planning to join TBR Dream Marathon 2011, all the best. To my TBR DM Classmates, let’s pay it forward and be of help to the second batch of first-time marathoners. Bravo Ms.Jaymie for another “dream race” coming!!

May these quotes inspire each of us to continue running and
finish your first marathon:

“Our running shoes are really erasers. Every step erases a memmory of a past failure.
Every mile brings us closer to a clean slate. Each footstrike rubs away a word, a look,
or an event which led us to believe that sucess was beyond our grasp.”
- John Bingham
“The marathon’s about being in contention over the last 10K.  That’s when it’s about what you have in your core.  You have run all the strength, all the superficial fitness out of yourself, and it really comes down to what’s left inside you.  To be able to draw deep and pull something out of yourself is one of the most tremendous things about the marathon.”
– Rob de Castella
