Batang Pinoy Games Visayas Leg Now Open
The Lamberto Macias Sports & Cultural Center became alive with music, dancing and clamor as the young athletes coming all over the Visayas enter the gymnasium for the opening of the Batang Pinoy Games 2011 (Visayas Leg). The young delegation had a simple parade complete with drums and lyre band on the streets of Dumaguete City announcing to the people that the games will now begin.
It is good to know that more than 700 young athletes registered for this sporting event and Dumaguete City Mayor Hon. Manuel “Chiquiting” Sagarbarria is more than happy to welcome all delegates in the “City of Gentle People.” Meanwhile, the Provincial Administrator of Negros Oriental delivered a speech saying that “We believe that sports is an essential tool to mold our young generation to become responsible, disciplined individuals giving them the promise of a healthy citizenry.”

Batang Pinoy Games serves as the national sports competition program for children, and is envisioned to address the need for a grassroots sports program centered on values formation inherent in the practice of sports and play.
This is a revived sports program to “look for future Philippine team members” says Commissioner Jose Luis Gomez when he shared a brief message during the opening rally at the Macias gym. Reminiscent of what he in one of the press releases, “We know there’s a lot of unrecognized talent amongst the kids out there. We want to recognize that talent. Batang Pinoy will let us find that talent, help our young athletes realize their potential and create the next generation of world-class Filipino athletes.”

Commissioner Akiko Thompson-Guevarra, a former Olympian swimmer herself, inspired the young athletes to continue all their pursuits as they will benefit on the sacrifices they are doing. Commissioner Joaquin “Chito” Loyzaga on the other hand, congratulated the youth just for participating this 4-day event because they are chosen to compete in the Visayas qualifying leg and persuaded the listeners not only to compete but also to develop new friendship among each other.
Teams from Tacloban City; La Carlota City; McArthur,Letye; Cebu City; Maasin City; Bayawan, Bacolod City, Calbayog, San Jose (Antique), Bohol, Talisay, Himamaylan, Leyte, Sibulan , Tanjay, Manjuyod, Valencia and the host Dumaguete City have sent their best athletes to compete in their respective games.
During the Governor’s night at the newly-built convention center, Gov. Roel Degamo told everyone that the province is in full support for the development of sports. He even added that, “it doesn’t matter if we spend a big amount of money if the results will help develop the potential of these young athletes.”

Batang Pinoy Games 2011 is a grass-roots development program organized by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) to identify young talents to be trained for the national pool of athletes. Mindanao leg was hosted by Zamboanga City (Oct 17-30); Visayas leg is being hosted by Dumaguete City (Nov 10-13); Northern Luzon leg by Baguio City (Nov 24-27); Southern Luzon by Sta. Cruz City (Dec 4-7); NCR leg (Nov 29 – Dec 2); and the Finals will be held at Naga City on December 10-13, 2011.
