AN OPEN LETTER TO THE ORGANIZERS OF ADIDAS KING OF THE ROAD

Dear Adidas Philippines,

First of all, let me congratulate you for a well-attended race event. A lot says you reached your 10,000 runners target. Good job on the promotions and marketing department.

I am one of the 10,000++ runners who participated in this year’s King of the Road (KOTR), running 21K. So far, this is the most expensive event that I joined- Php850 for all race categories. Considering the premium registration fee, I deserve a premium race event. Right? Also, I expected the best as I believe “Impossible is Nothing” with Adidas.

However, my expectations were not met (Kung gaano kataas ang registration fee, ganun naman kababa yung quality ng race na ito). Let me further explain this (with corresponding tweets before, during and after the run):

Registration period. There were “commotions” on registration centers. Reports are heard that sizes of singlets are not fit for some runners. I am a member of AdiNation of Runners, I have a discount from you, but I waited 3 long hours before I was able to get my race kit. Pinababalik n’yo pa ako next week just to get my race packet. Hassle, ibinigay n’yo lang sa akin yung race kit ko when you learned that I’m a blogger. And then ask, as if ako pa yung may utang na loob to promote our “Refresh your Gear” Promo. Pero okay lang yun, I still thanked you and did ran your promotion on my site for free not expecting anything in return. That is, because I believe in Adidas products.

Baggage counter. I arrived at the baggage area 5:00am, a bit late but when I was about to deposit my bag, I saw a long line of runners, reminds me of the long lines during the registration. I counted those in-charge and they are less than 10. Simple math, how can 10 people handle 10,000 runners’ bag? Let’s just say 5,000 (as a lot of runners left their bags in their vehicles), how? It was already 5:15am and I wasn’t able to deposit my bag yet. I looked around and saw that a lot of 21K runners are still on the long queue, calculating the time, they will not be able to reach the starting line by 5:30am. Sino pala? Si Rizal? Anyway, after some time buti pumayag, I then shouted to all 21K runners in the line na i-deposit na ang bag para makahabol sa gun start. I then heard from the one in-charge (with a high voice), “Gusto n’yo iwan n’yo na lang dyan. Balikan n’yo na lang mamaya, hindi namin sagot kapag nawala.” Buti walang pumayag na runners, as far as I know.

Route. I don’t have problems kung mapadaan man sa putik or mabatong kalsada, for me its part of the fun but when I was running after some 3 kilometers I realized na single file na ang 21K because the 10K runners are running towards us. Hindi pala running because a lot started to walk na din, forced because the route was too narrow. I overheard a lady runner, “good bye PR, good bye Php850.” I feel sad for her, she was literally rubbing elbows against 10K runners, mostly men, lots of energies are wasted just like that. It was a smooth ride until KM.12-13, same thing happened 10K runners are running towards us, masikip yung route. Who’s to blame, the 10K runners? 21K runners? Si Rizal na lang. I treated this run as my LSD and training and I don’t want to walk so I jump over the other side of the road (along Flyover) so I can run and not walk.

Hydration Station. I don’t know who really is in-charge here, is it the sponsor (Powerade) or the race director/organizer? Because I think, a good organizer ensures that the race is “organized.” The lack of hydration at kilometers 12-15 is unforgivable. I saw fellow runners pick up bottles of Powerade beside the road thrown away by other runners just so they keep hydrated. I even saw some who drank from the big bucket (used to cool the bottles). Kadiri you must say, but that’s their way of being hydrated because the organizer didn’t made sure that there are enough water and sports drink for all the runners especially for the 21K. I believe that they didn’t pay Php850 just to drink like that. Good thing, I brought my hydration belt with me. But how about others who didn’t?

@journeyingjames via Twitter:

Race Marshals: My friends are ranting that they saw a lot of 10K and 5K runners who didn’t follow the exact route, didn’t follow the exact turn around point. Who cares? Kulang po kasi yung marshals nyo, a lot of roads are not closed to traffic too. My friends were there too when a female runner trip off and your official photographer was just taking photos, kung hindi pa sumigaw yung friend ko natumawag ng medic hindi pa magagawan ng paraan. Good thing, a running doctor was there to be of help.

Finisher’s Medal. After running 21K, I cannot look on the my hard-earned medal. Reminds me of my elementary years, actually maganda pa yung medal ko nung elementary ako. I don’want to compare, but I paid P750 in RunRio races and I received medals way much better than my latest medal from KOTR. A friend of mine said, “Ang pangit ng medal nyo. P850?”

Water at the Finish Line. As I crossed the finish line, what is the most important thing to do? Hydrate for faster recovery. I was handed a bottle of water, I asked, “Meron bang malamig?” What do I expect after all that happened? Well, charge it to experience.

@journeyingjames via Twitter:
This #kotr was a disaster! Water at d finish line is n0t cold.anu bang breakfast ito? Wlang kwenta!

Buffet Breakfast. Advertised as “buffet breakfast” the reason why the steep registration fee. But then after another long queuing, all I saw was a banana, 2 pieces of pandesal, 1 jumbo hotdog, jam, butter packed in a styropor. Since when did “buffet breakfast” become like this? Don’t we get a refund? At least for the advertised “buffet breakfast.” And by the way, nice choice of post-race food, so healthy- talk about hotdogs. 1 banana (P5); 2 pandesal (P6); jumbo hotdog (P15); jam and margarine (P10); plastic utensils (P2); styropor (P1), total cost: P39? I hope I’m wrong with my calculations (Sana yumaman pa kayo).

@journeyingjames via Twitter:
Runner’s post-race food according to @adidasph : 2 pandesal 1 hotdog (junkfood), butter and strawberry jam. So healthy! (insert sarcastic smiley here ___ #kotr

Loot bag. Wala? First time kong makasali sa race na walang loot bag. Okay lang naman, what would I expect after all the things that happened.

Well, here are the good points: Publishing of Unofficial Race Results on the race day itself; Cheering squads; flyover route; good weather; nice singlet; and accurate distance. Buti na lang I was able to get a Colgate plax, pandesal from Fortune, coffee, Green tea samplings, Body Shop give aways.

As a consumer of your race event I thought it wise and proper to give you a feedback. After all, I believe that you want to hear valuable feed backs from your customer, a runner of 2010 King of the Road as such. Hoping that this would be read by your good office, I have a lot of questions and I am hopeful to receive a reply. Thank you so much for reading my letter.

I write this not hindi para siraan kayo, but because I love running and I love Adidas. I hope that this would be a learning experience both to you guys and to us runners.

To runners with the same sentiments (or otherwise), please do add your comments at the comment section of the blog or spread this letter for everyone to read, I’m very much sure that Adidas will be able to read this.

Now its time to move on (damaged has been done), because I believe that we are one running community here in the Philippines and we promote running the best way we can, I trust that you will do better on KOTR 2011.

By the time you read this, I have used my retired Adizero Ace for my recovery run and have donated 2 pairs of old shoes for your Refresh Your Gear Project (just pure donation to the Hope Worldwide Foundation). Both of these done sapagkat naniniwala parin ako sa Adidas at sa mithiin nito.

Shake hands?

Sincerely,

James Betia

you make good points. But I do have to point out that even though there was no loot bag, you did get loot — Plax, Fortune pandesal, coffee, and Body Shop stuff.

Also, loot bags are freebies and usually contain things that sponsors give out as promotional aids. The content of the loot bag is never taken out of the reg fee paid — reg fees pay just for cost of organizing, timing chips, singlet, donation to cause (and profit margin). Just something to consider.

    [Reply]

    journeyingjames Reply:

oo nga, thanks to other sponsors. but still adidas didnt pay for that. mga x-deals lang yun right?
we have seen a lot of successful races with reg fees lower that this.

    [Reply]

    Noelle Reply:

What I mean is, when we register for races, we should not expect the organizers to fill loot bags using funds from the reg fee. We should look at the price they charge as the price they quote for organizing the event (inclusive of profit margin). Hindi kasama sa costing ang loot bag.

So next time a race charges P850, think twice about joining, because loot bags are never a sure thing.

    [Reply]

    journeyingjames Reply:

indeed! so the question remains, saan napunta yung rest (or most) of the registration fee? we have to note that the singlet is made of low cost material, out-sourced.

james with regards to ur open letter to adidas, all the things that u’ve pointed out was definitely true & a lot can attest on that!

    my concerns:

    1. hydration stations are not placed on a well-technical manner, especially if u’re a first time racer/1st time half-marathoner. last 3km was no water/powerades, so i was feeling dehydrated already..i remember remus (milo marathon event), he collapsed on his last 1km because of being dehydrated.
    2. at the finish line, when the staff gave me my very first finisher’s medal, i was disappointed! i did my 21km because of the medal for motivation. good thing i just saw it at the finish line, if not, i won’t be motivated at all :(
    3. no loot bags! for an expensive registration fee of 850, we all are expecting to have one!
    4. buffet breakfast? duh??? such disappointment!!! hotdog, bread, banana & jams???w/o water… do u think it’s all worth-it? better if u just deduct 100 pesos on the registration fee so we can have a decent breakfast at fasfood chains!

    [Reply]

    journeyingjames Reply:

    thank you very much lenz!
i hope adidas would read your concerns. apir to all your comments. lets hope that they will do better next year if not wag na lang silang mag-organize ng race.

    Arjay Reply:

ohh, have you given this letter to the organizers?? kasi mas ok din sana kung yung organizers and you nalang maguusap diba? di na kailangan painitin din ulo ng mga tao, if yung improvement ang gusto mo,, pero i think revolution ang gusto mo eh,, am i right?? :)

    journeyingjames Reply:

yes arjay, i have emailed them too. no reply yet. not revolution, i just want to see a world-class race here in the Philippines. diba maganda kung hindi na natin kailangan pumnta ng ibang bansa para ma-experience yung world-class race?

    Arjay Reply:

I passed by RUNNR and saw that an Adidas singlet’s average price is P550.00. So if you look at it positively, MLB Road Specialists (the race organizer as I assume from the race cones). Had only P300.00 to work with per runner. Yeah I agree the foul-ups are inexcusable. But I felt, overall, the race was ok.

Aren’t you glad they didn’t do the Expo this year like last year’s terrible experience? :)

accurate distance.

Am always been a fan and believer of adidas products and their great cause in the Running community. Much more they have the number one endorser my idol Haile Gebrselasie. I’ve been joining competitive races for more than 3 years now with an average of 1 to 2 race a month in the distance of 10km,16km and most recently half marathon. To say I’ve never been run in a KOTR do I love to just for the experience and the Hype it brings not to mention its nice singlet. But given the high price of registration it made me think twice. Last Oct. 24 there is two race one in GBC which is the KOTR and the other one in Ortigas which is the St.Peter Life Run. Obviously this two are running event just for one big comparison the Registration fee. KOTR P850 the St. Peter Life Run P50. So where do you think last Oct. 24 am running? And I never regret my choice to run in St. Peter Life Run 10km. Aside from its challenging route since it new to me. I was even amazed how a race with the registration like that goes so smoothly. There are lots of Race Marshall, the hydration is well in place. I don’t even expect a giveaways considering a singlet with only P50 the cheapest race I’ve been. To my surprised they even have giveaways. Wow! I could not help but paint a smile on my face. I’ve never been to KOTR though I wanted to, but I got the surprised of my life since joining a race. Congratulations to St. Peter Life Run for a successful and wonderful event. Surely I wont hesitate to join again on your event. You guys Rock \m/

I was really expecting to receive a very fine finisher’s medal, since this was my very first 21k, nagulat ako nang makakita ng Philippine colred medal, (Gold, blue, white, red) Potek! Ano ako? Gragraduate ng kindergarten!? Sorry for saying this ha, but Rio’s events are really expensive, yet, SULIT!!! You get a lootbag, may timing chip/Dtag na, may singlet din naman, (even though hindi ko gusto ang singlet ng Run United, pang basketball ang material), MAY FINISHER’S SHIRT, may (mini magazine _Nature Valley Run), malupit/grocery like loots inside the bags, HAGGEN DANZ Ice cream, at NAPAKA GANDANG MEDAL!!! Nainggit ako sa medal ng REXONA! To think that ADIDAS is a brand that’s INTERNATIONALLY FAMOUS, compared to RIO’s NATIONAL Glamour only, I expected na MAS MAGANDA ANG KING OF THE ROAD, kaso sayang, mukhang nagkamali ako.

Pero… may nagustuhan ako sa race nila, (akala niyo siguro puro reklamo lang, meron din naman akong nagustuhan) at yun ay yung MOTIVATIONAL BILLBOARDS nila placed all over the route, they were placed at very strategic locations, just when you needed it. Hahahaha!) The other one were the cheering squads! Salamat Lasalle at UE!

    Good job on this article.

Sobrang lalayo pa ng water stations for the 21k.

Kwento ng tito ko na almost 30 years ng tumatakbo, sa lahat ng tinakbuhan nyang 21k di pa sya naglalakad kasi pagdating ng 15k halos sunod sunod na ang water station then may booth na nagbibigay ng saging, and cold sponge para refreshing parin. Take note that was about 15years ago with low registarion fees. Ibig sabihin kayang suportahan yung race.

Truth in advertising. That’s what KOTR is guilty of. And to think that this is actually one of the “signature” races in Metro Manila, so there really was no need to hype up the race by promising runners a buffet breakfast, reflective slap strap, etc. What we only need is a good wide route with accurate kilometer markers & enough hydration.

    >kulang ang marshalls nila. had to pee before the race but had a hard time looking for someone to ask where the nearest restroom or portalet was located. had to run 10k with a full bladder.
    >buti na lang naiihi na ako bago mag start yung race so hindi na ko nakiagaw sa drinks sa stations also, i brought my own
    >patalo ang breakfast. had to go to kfc right after kasi tirik na mata sa gutom
P650 for 16k; P600 for 10k; P550 for 5k; and P400 for 3k. sosyal ang portalets. hiwalay ang male/female. may taga lysol pa after mo gamitin.
    >kaasar ang route. ang sikip. at may puddles pa yung sa may 3k
    >loved the inspirational signs. i give them points for that.
*kahit na disappointed sa race organizers, i still will continue to advocate adidas products. i actually work @ a sports PT clinic at adidas na talaga ang recommended brand ko for running shoes. sana better ang KOTR next year…nakahiya sa mga patients kong ininvite ko to run.

I didn’t run. But my boyfriend did his 1st 21k.

He expressed his disappointments to me:

    DISAPPOINTMENT NO. 1: MEDAL

when i met him after the race, i was so proud and excited and i immediately asked for his medal.. he smiled and pulled out the medal from his backpack..

my reaction: wow..galing galing! 1st time! frame natin!
    boyfriend: sure ka?
(he handed the medal to me)
my reaction: (kunot noo) ay bat ganito yung ribbon, naka-glue gun lang? sunog pa. yung medal daming scratches.. eh maganda pa gawang recto dito eh..
    boyfriend: kakadisappoint no?

    DISAPPONTMENT NO.2: LOOTBAG

me: ayos lang yan.. baka yung next half marathon mo mas maganda medal.. haha.. nakakahiya itabi si adidas..me tatak pero chaka yung medal.. laugh trip pag may nakakita.. asan na loot bag? patingin! dami freebies? =P
    boyfriend: hon, walang lootbag..
    me: di nga?!
boyfriend: oo, tinipid ata eh, low budget yata organizer nito..
(sorry, tell it like it is)

    DISAPPOINTMENT NO.3: BUFFET BREAKFAST PROMISE

(lo and behold, may peanut butter akong bitbit)

    DISAPPOINTMENT NO.4: HYDRATION
boyfriend: oo nga eh, tapos alam mo ba the last 2KM sobrang uhaw na uhaw na ko.. wala ng water.. kasi before that ubos na talaga.. nakakita ako ng iba na namumulot ng powerade sa daan.. yung bawas na ha.. tapos iniinom na nila..
    me: what?! yuck..sobra naman..
boyfriend: hon, wag ka magagalit ha? ginaya ko sila.. super desperate na. no water, no cold towels, di ko na alam gagawin ko.. i need to hydrate myself.. pinili ko nalang yung super konti bawas, tinapon ang half ng contents, pinunasan ang gilid.. at nagdasal na sana walang sakit yung unang uminom..

At this point sobrang naawa ako sa kanya cause he don’t deserve to be doing this or anyone for that matter. i mean come on adidas! you are responsible if anyone of the runners get hurt during the race.. i mean, you saw what happened in milo.. how come you didn’t provide enough hydration during the race and especially for 21k runners? why didn’t you see this coming? expect the unexpected.. you should’ve stocked up on hydration.. may dala ngang hydration belt, eh ano naman pang rerefill kung walang ng tubig o energy drink?

The race is SUPER FAIL. Basics lang what I mentioned above. Clearly, there are other things to complain about (see other posts above).

I recently went to an Adidas store and bought myself gym socks, my boyfriend a pair of running shorts and Sennheiser earphones. I mean, we love Adidas, patronize it and swear by the quality of its products.

My boyfriend and his runner friends were so excited to join KOTR this year and was among the first to register in the Makati branch.

Case in point: They don’t deserve this low quality race. We spent hard earned money on Adidas products and race registration fees. And yet the runners feel na natipid sila. Adidas is a premium sports apparel line. We expected more. Or okay, we expected at least for them to take care, do well and NOT FAIL on the BASICS. BUT THEY DID.

Where is the 850 pesos x 10,000++ runners fee? Whose pockets got fat/ter after this race?

    Wawa. May karma.

Thank you so much James for taking the initiative and being so proactive in calling the attention of the KOTR organizers and Adidas for this purpose.

I had my comments as well from start to finish of my 21K race:

    1) “Ang layo naman ng unang hydration, uhaw na ako….”

    2) “Give way to the 21K runners… Nasan ang mga marshalls???” This was at the point na maputik and the 10K runners almost occupied the road… At this point naglakad ako around 30 seconds or so.

    3) “Bakit walang sensor ng D-tag? Paano kaya nila mahuli ang mandaya”. This was at the first U-turn sa Buendia.

    4) I had no garmin, I did not know the KMs I’ve ran kasi kulang sa sinage kung ilang K na natakbo mo..siguro 16thK. My friend and I were having cramps.

    5) “Pulutin ko na kaya left over powerade sa tabi… just to hydrate myself” But my friend and I just contented ourselves with the ice tubes to help lower our temperature.

    6) “Yes! I am alive…Thanks God!” as I crossed the finished line.

    7) “Hah? Walang malamig na tubig???” I was so dead tired and I had no more energy to argue and there is no point to argue because I’d be be barking at the wrong tree!

    8) “ANG PANGET! pang honorable mention!” as I tried to look at my hard earned finisher’s medal”

    9) “Hotdog & 2 pandesal??? for a buffet breakfast???

    10) “What was so special with this race that costs P850, PARANG HOLD UP SA MGA RUNNERS TO AH.” This was while we were eating the unhealthy hotdog breakfast.

    11) “WILL I EVER RUN IN ANY FUTURE KOTR RUN IN THE FUTURE?”

Well, let’s hope that we receive an official response from Adidas to address the runner’s disappointments because at this point, to me the Adidas Race is not worth calling “KING OF THE ROAD”

Sana may sequel ka sa blog mo… “LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE KOTR RACE”

    Thanks again James!

    hey great points you had..

actually i was really preparing for this event since it was my first 21K run…good points you raised on the route and everything else but i’m actually happy just to finish it..
on hindsite however, looking at your comments and hearing the rants, i believe way way way better pa yung ibang runs na sinasalihan namin…wala ngang tubig dun sa may essensa towers i think so what i did was put ice on my head para kahit papano hindi ma-dehydrate…panget din yung mga times na nagkakasalubungan yung mga runners lalo na for me since i was targeting a particular time…and when i saw the medal, sobrang panget..i got better medals by joining the intramurals of our company sportsfest and i did not bother to get the food after seeing what my sister got…i really patronize adidas products and all that pero after this parang ayoko na…that P850 joining fee was not money well spent parang mas importante pa ang kita kesa sa safety and welfare ng mga tumatakbo…after this i’m shifting to nike or any other brand other than adidas…and i’ll probably think twice of joining this event next year…

    [Reply]

    toop Reply:

on another note, tarpaulins are cheap…that’s around 300 per piece sana man lang naglagay sila per kilometer…so doing the math (at least for 21K) that would cost P6300 and divided by the total number of runners (again at least for 21K – approx 1200 runners), it will only cost adidas P5.25 per runner..solid na mahal yung registration fee, bad food, kulang sa hydration stations and not a well planned route…i do like adidas products pero after this iniisip ko na i might not be getting my money’s worthsa mga products ng adidas…kaya i’m seriously considering shifting to another brand…baka mas aalagaan pa nila ako hindi tulad ng adidas na puro profit/bottom linee lang iniisip…and after what happened sa milo marathon, the organizers should know better…i was so excited to finish my 1st 21K pero looking back i wish i could’ve have did my 1st 21K in some other run…thank god my fiance did not run here, she’d be pissed on the rip-off adidas did to its very LOYAL consumers

your blog said it all… nega and positive points… i’ll go for the cheering squads and the motivational tarpulins… but adidas’ hydration station really sucked… sorry for those who resorted to water scavenging but no i won’t stoop that low. i may not have improved my pr which was already at 2:30 but i’d rather walked the last 10k than opt to drink leftover water.

i probably won’t run the KOTR in 2011. not even if rio will organize it (i got burned with the blue water day spa run which he organized-i got robbed of the 750 [was it 700?] reg fee which later went down to 300) and no freebies.)

i am a big fan of adidas. i save some just to be able to afford their apparel. aside from the 2 singlets i got for the 2009 & 2010 KOTR, i have two pairs of adidas shoes, cap, three shirts, 2 shorts and recently bought a pair of socks for the KOTR 2010. mag-nike na lang kaya ako? :)

Guys..guys..guys.. Dont forget its all about running. We have to many complains whereas in 2008 when races priced at P250 or less water stations are rare and no loot bags. we still enjoy it…so why bother?? Na pamper lng tayo masyado ng previous races with lots of freebies.. and sometimes race without a cause pa nga..again its all about loving to run no more complains.

    [Reply]

    Bear Reply:

sir..it’s 850 pesos not 250. It’s my 15th run and based on experience kahit walang loot bags or short sa water stations, ok lng. kase it was not advertised. Though di nila advertised water stations, still they said its BUFFET and there’s a REFLECTIVE STRAP and we should expect water stations esp for 21k runners. Normal lang nman hanapin yung promise nila sayo di ba? Its NOT the same as you ordering a happy meal with free toys. yung toy dun, FREE. sa atin, binayaran natin yun. kasama yun kaya expect namin. di po ba?

And again it’s 850…para lang tuloy kami (di na lang kita sama sir kase ok lng sau) nagpanakaw. Masarap isipin na sana may beneficiaries sila.
I think what you are trying to imply is “kung may magagawa pa ba tayo?”…answer is “it depends” kung may konsensya sila :) at least they would reply on these reactions :)

I really hope the organizers take the time out to reply to you. During the registration process, I posted a feedback of my negative experience in Trinoma on the Adidas Philippines Facebook page. Instead of apologizing and reassuring us that they will work to improve the process, they deleted my comment. My 2nd feedback on why my comment was deleted was also removed within a matter of minutes.

It really is sad to see a global company ignore a customer’s feedback to improve one of its major event. Hope they listen to your feedback and work on it.

Buffet breakfast advertisement went wrong, drinks stations running out of drinks by 7am (especially along the Kalayaan Flyover region), baggage area with an EFFIN’ LONG LINE and it was 5:15 before I get to deposit my bag (such a genius for not dividing the baggage counters according to the DISTANCE category), human stampede, unofficial race result not showing up.

    Upside…
I don’t have any problems with the 21K route marshals, distance was accurate.

James, don’t worry, hindi lang naman KOTR Philippines ang ganyan, may mas worst pa (from last year’s race):

based sa adidas phil s FB,they have beneficiaries sa event na ito.

am just so pissed off the way they handled the complaints.parang sila pa yung galit. pero pag may good feedback eh kala mo napaka-perfect nila. is it true that merong nahimatay last sunday?

i want my bib number’s name changed. my name is not there. iba yung name nung bib number ko. i registered fair and square, i paid and i trained for that race. it’s my first half marathon. i demand nothing more from them but to give me the credit that i worked hard for. i don’t care na about loot bag nor the buffet breakfast which was falsely advertised by the way, i just want my name and gender there in that result. that’s all.

Wow! I heard from fellow runners that the race didn’t go so well but I didn’t expect it to be this bad! Especially since it cost 850 pesos!

I didn’t run in the KOTR, I opted instead to run at St. Peter Life Run. It was only 50 pesos!! And we got a singlet, loot bag, photo booth, cash prizes, and all proceeds were given to Bantay Bata! The definition of a REAL fun run!

    Hi,

I am a long time runner myself and a loyal endorser of Adidas products it’s really sad to hear about your terrible experience with KOTR. I had friends who joined too and had similar disgruntled comments..

I believe though that the lack of hydration is the most important factor that they overlooked, and can especially be dangerous coming into the latter part of a 21k run… I can’t believe the organizers could have overlooked such a basic requirement, I mean it isn’t the first time KOTR did a race and it’s not as if running is just a ‘new sport’ here..

I just hope next year Adidas reviews these mistakes and chooses a better and more professional race organizer to handle their races and to represent their brand better. tsk tsk =(. So sad to hear this.

Thanks for sharing your story so will be wary of these guys next time.

I quite agree. If it costs anywhere from P300k to P1.0MM to stage a race (according to an organizer friend of mine), then Adidas made a killing with KOTR 2010. While this is not a treatise on capitalism in sporting events, I would like to call Adidas to task for failing us runners on the most basic services like race support and hydration.
It is not too much to ask the organizers to have conducted a pre-race route scan and to have had alternatives. The city permit would have afforded them some leeway on the use of other roads if the intended route was to become impassable.
And haven’t they learned from the lessons of Remus’ death? Hydration is a basic requirement of any runner especially for the longer routes. If I remember right, the rule of thumb is a water station every 2 kms.
This was an unqualified disaster. I am disappointed that Adidas has not yet issued an apology to the 10,000 runners who paid one of the most expensive registration fees to-date for a Manila-based race.

Ditto. The 10,000++ KOTR Runners deserve an apology from Adidas. It’s already taking them long and it’s really disappointing.

POST KO NA LANG: PART 1
adidas Philippines: we removed the reflective slap strap because we adjusted the gun start. The reason why we planned to have the strap because this year’s singlet was black. To put it in proper perspective the event was not a profit oriented type o…f campaign. To be perfectly honest this run was a self liquidating type of event. We get all the funds from the collected registration fees. There was a big increase on the fees for this year to cover for the Timing band. The supplier that we used came all the way from Perth, Austtralian. This is just part and parcel of the things that we have to cover in order to mount this event. Also, we’ve read the open letter and we’ve met as a team already and all the details were addressed point by point and rest assured this will be included in the improvements for KOTR 2011. Salama!

    PART 2:
All the artistas and bands that you saw were all adidas assets. Obvious po bang naka adidas sila lahat? No need to worry we got all the inputs whether valid or not, violent reactions from other runners, and positive comments covered and these will be used for next year’s KOTR 2011. Salamat Sir!

Buti nalang di kami tumuloy ni Marc dito. Ang mahal kasi talaga eh. Php850 for 5k??? OA ha. It’s not like sandamukal na tubig bibigay syo in such a distance.

I agree na nothing to do with the brand yun. Kahit ang fail netong race, the best parin Adidas apparel… Pero for running shoes, Asics ako talaga :D

Pero sana the organizers take note of your feedback. They should at least acknowledge the shortcomings to do better next time.

Well, here are the good points: Publishing of Unofficial Race Results on the race day itself; Cheering squads; flyover route; good weather; nice singlet; and accurate distance. Buti na lang I was able to get a Colgate plax, pandesal from Fortune, coffee, Green tea samplings, Body Shop give aways.” :)

The letter has so many complaints that it doesn’t seem to be sincere anymore, especially when you complain about the “loot bag.”

If someone closes the roads for me for Php 850, I think that’s really really cheap. So in essence, we do get what we pay for.

Question, Why did not Adidas give out receipts for the run?

Isn’t it by law, establishments are required to issue receipts for purchases above P25.- ?

This is my 2nd 10k run. Before KOTR I ran for the Pink Run just a week before. I had a 1:06 mins for my first run @ the Pink Run. So hyper pa ako sa running of 10k. I was expecting ma beat ko yung 1:06 time ko nung 1st run. Pagdating sa KOTR, I ran for 1:12… goodbye PR nga. Sikip kasi. Tama. I had a hard time running kasi narrow yung route. next time nalang ako mag PR, pag di masyado marami tao.

Extribe is a triathlon organizer na sumabak sa pag-organize ng running events because of the running boom.

Next time you join a race, check first if the organizer is Extribe so you can choose other races. As for Adidas, sana next year choose your organizer wisely. Sana nga si Rio nalang…
